I just checked the Panasonic Website,
actually only the 812 meets the 9,5 mm size for the T40/41 bay.

May I ask you where you purchased your 811 drive from?
It seems to be pretty difficult to get hold of these oem drives
if one is not a reseller.

On the other hand, if IBM would put out the info about a DVD-R/RW Combo
drive
for the ultra bay slim, they would certainly help many of their customers
owning
T40s or T41s deciding when to buy what.

It would be quite a shame if they would sell an incompatible (to ultra bay
slim) drive with the T42.
