No, the connector on the back is different.
There are usb2 and pcmcia drives that will work

There is no CDRW for TP 770.
But....I was wondering if it's possible to take the CD-drive out of the
TP770 UltraBay-shell and replace it with a CDRW ?
Just like this one http://thinkpads.com/cdrwinfo.htm for TP 570/600.
