The results are in and the process seems to work.
The package was easy to install and run, it took less than an hour to
clone 5 Gb from the OEM 80 Gb Maxtor drive to the target 30 Gb Travelstar.
Now when I start up I get a menu that asks me which disk I want to start
from.
Starting from the new disk is the default which is good because I had
copied the OEM files into a directory so I wouldn't have to pick through
them to find the data files.
Of course in hindsight I realize that the system files wouldn't like
being copied so casually (which is why a product like XXclone was
developed).
When I try to start from the OEM disk I get a message saying that
Windows\System32\hal.dll is missing or corrupt.
So I seem to still have only one boot drive but I believe that's due to
my absent mindedness.
I thought about repeating the cloning procedure using the incremental
option (after deleting the OEM hal.dll) but decided I'd be better served
putting the effort into something more productive.

technology is the answer, what was the question?
