The discussion was up during last spring and summer in the Thinkpads.com
forum.
No true clarification ever came to anyones knowledge...as if the desired
information doesn't exist.

Datasheets from Intel regarding the 440BX chipset states out, that it can
take up to 4 slots of 256MB each, giving a total of 1GB of memory.

The discussion of banks and slots never seems to have a happy ending and is
quite confusing.

I also like your theory A Hood. It makes sense and also explains to me why
the onboard memory is switched out, when inserting two 256MB sticks.
(Yes James....I got my dirty hands on two of these babies, running 512MB now
and being a happy man :-)
There must be some sort of autosensing gizmo device in the design of the
440BX based 770 series.

James, you said once, that the onboard slot in 770Z only accepts up to a
128MB PC100 stick ?
Could a conclusion therfore be something like this:

[Onboard slot] = [Bank 0, autodisable]
[Slot One] = [Bank 0/1], 64/128MB sticks using only bank 1.
[Slot Two] = [Bank 2/3]

Maybe it's too brainy, I don't know.

Best regards
Brian
