OK here we go; somehow during the upgrade from Win98 to 98SE all the printer objects got reset
to UsePrinterOffline (whatever that means). I had to uncheck that and also disable the spooler.
Now everything seems to be working. Thanks for all help. Any explanation about 'offline'
appreciated.
