this is often due simply to sites checking the user-agent string
returned by the browser - some sites check if you have IE above a
certain version (5 or 6, usually) and if not, refuse you entry. you can
get round this by changing the user-agent string so that your browser
pretends to be IE6 - iirc opera has an option for this somewhere, and
with firefox/mozilla you can get a plugin to do the same thing.
unfortunately some sites use IE-specific javascript which is more of a
problem; sometimes if it's simply to open another window you can cut and
paste the url from the page, but often it's too much hassle to be
worthwhile. in which case i just take my custom elsewhere (as i don't
use windows, so i don't have much choice!)
