To add a single 128MB EDO memory module to ThinkPad
385XD/560X series with Microsoft Windows 95/98/ME, you need to change
memory address as follows (no problem in case of Windows 2000/XP):
This must be done BEFORE you swap memory sticks.
1. Go to Control Panel > choose System > Device Manager.
2. Highlight NeoMagic MagicGraph 128 XD adapters > select Properties >
choose Resources tab.
3. Uncheck Use Automatic Setting on the Resources tab page.
4. Highlight under Resource type: Memory Range.
5. Choose Change Setting.
6. Assign a new memory range value.
----08000000-08FFFFFF ------> F8000000-F8FFFFFF
----09200000-093FFFFF ------> F9200000-F93FFFFF
----09000000-090FFFFF ------> F9000000-F90FFFFF
There are more than three memory settings shown in the device configuration,
, though two will report that they cannot be changed. This is normal. There
are three settings you, as the user, can change. Scroll down to ensure you
get all of them.
7. Choose OK > OK > Close. Do not reboot yet, even though the system asks
you to do so.
8. Shut down the machine, disconnect the AC adapter and remove the main
battery.
9. Add the 128Mb memory module to the laptop.
10. Reboot your system, holding the F1 key to enter setup.
11. Check under Config and see if the memory count is correct. If desired,
enter the Test menu and perform a memory check. Exit the setup menu and
reboot to Windows.
12. If you have changed the settings correctly, under Windows 98, you should
have a legible display. If the display is corrupted, shut down, re-insert
the original memory stick, and boot normally. Enter Device Manager and
re-check your video card's memory settings for the corrected values.

RE: Re: [Thinkpad] 128 Mb RAM in 560X UPDATE
The ebay seller was teriffic about swapping the offending module. The
replacement has a Dell part number, and is labeled 128 EDO.
Made the memory address changes as recommended, installed the chip, and am
happy to report that it works fine under W98SE and W2000.
No errors or mishaps, no stumbles or program errors.
Going from 96Mb to 160Mb did make a noticable difference in W2000
performance.
Now if I could only upgrade the processor from 233Mhz, but I doubt that's
going to happen.
Matt
