Hi,
two weeks ago, I bought a used TP 600E on ebay.
It has the latest BIOS (INET36WW) and was delivered with XP on a 4 gig hd.
For me, this drive was too small and I don't have an XP install CD, so I
installed Win 98 SE on a 20 gig hd.
I also installed the configuration utility and all the latest drivers (all
but the separate modem driver, because a modem driver seems to be
incorporated in the audio driver; I don't need the modem anyway and don't
even have a way to test it).
Everything looks well in the device manager, but:
I get no sound from the speakers except for system beeps.
The strange thing is that sound *does* come okay over headphones!
(This is, if I read other posts correctly, different from other's problems).
Another maybe related point:
Fn keys seem to work but not the volume related ones (vol. up/down, mute)
I also installed the on-screen display utility, but that doesn't seem to do
anything.
The speaker sound *did* work well in XP when I first tried it after I got
it. Meanwhile, I even reinstalled the 4 gig hd with XP still on it: the
sound is there (but neither volume Fn keys nor On Screen display work in XP,
like in 98). When I put the Win98 drive back in, the sound is gone.
I played with the DOS utility too, but that doesn't semm to relate to the
Windows settings.
Another odd (probably unrelated) thing is that Windows insists on being
docked (while it actually isn't and has never been since the install), so I
see a "Disconnect PC" (I don't know if that's the correct English
expression, as mine is a German system) in the start menu just above the
Shutdown.
When i try to "disconnect", I get an error or the machine freezes.
Thanks for help.
