You need to consider the the wider issues of the laptop/computer
industry today.
The big makers, have to plan several years ahead in order to have a
particular product ready for the market place.
In the case of Compaq as you may know, they were bought up by Hewlett
Packard. This kind of event happens much quicker than the product
development time. So Hewlett Packard find themselves with a product
they didnt plan and couldnt stop during production. they look at their
total product range and see that its duplicated by a Compaq product.
So what do they do? they rationalise their product range of laptops and
sell off what they got lumbered with when they bought Compaq, to get
their money back. thats why its so cheap. Probably nothing wrong with
the product BUT... expect to have no support out of warranty if there is
any.
Now IBM is more expensive than most, why? because they provide the type
of support their corporate customers expect, the build quality, and
spares and for the time frame they consider right for that product. You
wont get that for your Compaq however cheap it is.
