What I do to install win98 on a TP 75x or 76x series computer is the
following.
1) Make a Win98 startup disk on an existing Win98 computer.
2) Use that disk to format the hard drive on the computer and make it
bootable.
3) Make a dos directory and dump all the files from the a: drive and the ram
disk that has been created by the startup disk into that directory.
4) Copy the config.sys and autoexec.bat files over to the C:\ drive. You
will need to edit the config.sys file by taking all the stuff out except the
himem driver, the oakcdrom driver. Make sure to redirect the locations of
these files to the c:\dos\ directory rather than the a: drive
5) do the same with autoexec.bat. You will need to clear out all the stuff
except for mscdex - you will also need smartdrv.exe, but I cannot remember
where that goes (config.sys or autoexec.bat).
6) Attempt booting the machine from the diskdrive (with the cd-rom) in
place. If the cdrom is activated, you are all set for the next step.
7) put in the win98 cd. Make a directory on your hard drive called
c:\windows\options\cabs. Copy all the files in the win98 directory on the
win98 cd to this directory.
8) once all the files have copied over, run setup.
9) during setup it will ask for what directory to put windows into and will
offer you windows.000. Edit the suggestion by taking out ".000" and
continue. It will ask you if you want to do that, say yes. The install
should continue without fail.
10) once the install is done delete the dos directory and clear out the
config.sys and autoexec.bat files.
11) you should be all set to load drivers.
In all this should take about 1 hour plus the time is takes to load windows
and the drivers.

Clarification: You need both the floppy disk and the CDROM to install
Windows 98. Boot to floppy, jump through a few hoops to get it to read
the CD. Read the instructions on the web site. It isn't easy. Very few
people get it right the first time, thus the 12 hours. You change over
from floppy to CD in the middle of the process. I haven't done one in
three years, but I remember you had to practice doing it rong to know
how to do it right.

Then it shows a picture of a floppy disk and says F1. Is this the normal way
it should be if it has no OS? It has no CD-rom in it, but my friend has a
Thinkpad 360, which I believe the CDrom fits my 760, so could borrow it. My
thought was to use a Win98 startup disc to get a CDrom driver and CDrom
enabled, then install Win98SE from the CDrom after it is enabled from the
startup disc.
