I would recommend that if:
- More than one person uses it or
- You use it in several places or
- You use it in public places
then you should add a power-on password. Every time the machine starts you
will need to enter it, but so will someone else. You should use the
personalization editor to make a screen that gives your contact
information in case a nice person finds the machine and wants to return
it: Make it easy for him or her.
I would recommend to everyone that you ALWAYS have a supervisor password
if the machine ever leaves home or work. This will also lock the hard disk
and do a good job of protecting your data from being seen by your average
thief. Industry spies will not be thwarted by such simple means.
Clearing a password is trivial: When it asks for the password, type it
then add a space on the end. You'll get a display of the lock unlocking
and your password will be gone.
If you are worried about theft, consider a laptop alarm. If you are
worried about leaving it somewhere, look at something like yellowtag.com.
