I've added some commentary, from installing Win98 on my 600E.
You also might want to see the page on IBM's support site listing
instructions for installing a bunch of OSes on your 760XL. Instructions
are included for installing on a blank hard disk.

Do NOT attempt to boot from the CD to install at this or any point.
ThinkPads have funky hardware which really should be set up at install
time, so never run install from the CD.

You shouldn't NEED smartdrv, but it will help with speed. It goes in
autoexec, but can be loaded manually too.

Now you must copy IBM's "Additional Files for Winodws 98" into the setup
directory. This will help installation go smoothly, and ensure all your
devices get detected correctly (specifically, APM, modem and future
docking).

At this point, I would rename or delete the config.sys and autoexec.bat,
reboot and run setup. Smartdrv helps mostly with CD-ROM speed and the
first steps of Win98 installation. After the first reboot, it's all taken
care of by Win98.

You may wish to keep around a DOS directory for things like your CD-ROM
driver and the command-line configuration utility.
