Re: [Thinkpad] 600E/Win98SE: (still) no sound *from speakers*

First of all , whe you say there is sound through the headphone jack, are
you using an audio CD?
Since you have plugged into the jack, now you need to check that the jack
itself is not shorted. That will turn off your speakers.
you should read the install instructions on the IBM site. Some things don't
work if you don't follow the directions and do it their way.

Another try:

Yes, I don't believe there is a hardware problem, either. The big problem
is, I neither can locate a software problem.

> Did you install 98 from an IBM recovery disk?
I don't have a recovery disk. I had just the Thinkpad and the drive with XP
installed it was delivered with. I installed Win 98 SE from a retail CD onto
the new hard drive. Actually, it was an upgrade CD which asked for the CD of
a previous Windows version while installing (there was no Windows on the HD
at that moment, just MS-DOS 6.2.2). I used a OEM CD of Windows 95 OSR2,
which the setup scanned and accepted. After the setup, I added all the
freshly dl'd IBM drivers and utilities.

You stated above that there doesn't seem to be a hardware problem? But
meanwhile, there were some other strange things happening which IMO *could*
point into that direction (I'll describe them later).

Personally, I still find this unlogical:
- Audio drivers that work over the headphone jack, but not over the
speakers, and do seemingly (as reported by the OS) not have any resource
conflicts or the like.
- The hardware (esp. the speakers) working perfectly on the same Thinkpad
with a different OS.
These two don't seem to fit together.
But in the meantime I asked the hardware guru from our company which I
consider quite smart (which IMO is not the rule) who also thinks that that's
possible (at least under Windows 98). But he also didn't have a solution to
offer (he's not exactly a Thinkpad specialist).
But what to do then?
There's little I can do but downloading and installing the latest audio
drivers from IBM and checking device manager for conflicts (and there's
little doubt that I have the correct and latest drivers: Audio driver for
Windows 95/98 - ThinkPad 600E, 770X/Z; Version 2.88; Release Date 2000/10/31
<http://www-3.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/license.do?filename=mobiles/aftpcw
9x.exe>).
My favorite suspects are: the Thinkpad configuration software by IBM which
might mute the speakers in some way or (something I didn't think of until
now) the DOS configuration which might in some way restrict Windows' ability
to address the speakers.
Any ideas for that?

In addition, I recently had some other strange experiences with this
Thinkpad:
- Windows suddenly stopped to load with the last line in bootlog.txt being
"loadsuccess=<Windows directory>\ifshlp.sys ³, then freezing. I had to do a
complete restore, which gave me back Windows and the apps, but still no
sound, of course.
- The computer freezing when starting the previous version of MS-DOS (MS-DOS
6.2.2) after the line "Starting MS-DOS³ when using this option from the
Windows 98 start menu, but also, when trying to boot from a MS-DOS 6.2.2
boot disk (I've never seen happen that before). DOS 7.1 (from Windows 98)
booted fine both from the Windows 98 start menu and from a disk. I
re-flashed the BIOS (although it already had the latest BIOS before, version
1.16 (INET36WW)). That helped. But it didn't change anything in regard to
the missing speaker sound in Win 98.
All that adds up to something I see as weird behavior of this machine. There
*might* be a hardware problem, after all?
