I did the same thing (install 98SE on a 760 XL) some months ago, and I think
the described way (while being correct in general) won't work because
himem.sys is missing on the hard drive when you boot up from that.
I copied (if I recall correctly) the entire content of the boot disk to the
hard drive (all files to c:\dos\ except io.sys, msdos.sys, command.com,
drvspace.bin/dblspace.bin, autoexec.bat and config.sys, which should reside
in c:\) and edited c:\config.sys and c:\autoexec.bat to the resp. locations
under c:\ or c:\dos\. Then copied (with the CD-ROM switched in) all the
setup files to d:\install\win98\ (I think it is wise to partition your HD -
using FDISK or Partition Magic - so you can separate your data - including
essential install files - from the system and apps; so you can wipe your
system/app drive without losing your data) and ran setup from the HD.
You can delete C:\dos later. You should clean up c:\config.sys and
c:\autoexec.bat, too.
