I was actually referring to .wav (like the startup sound) and .mid files
from the hard drive. Now I just retried it with an audio CD. Same result:
plays nicely over the headphones, no sound from the speakers (with
headphones plugged in or out). I can even play both the audio CD and sounds
from the HD at the same time. Everything works over headphones.

There's not a lot I can check except for plugging headphones in and out.
Doesn't change anything for the speakers. That doesn't explain the
differences between 98 and XP, anyway.

Believe me, I read it and did exactly follow it. I even did the "Uninstall
Crystal Driver" procedure although there were no drivers to uninstall
before. And I tried to delete and reinstall the drivers again. No way.

This *is* weird. There are just too many contradictions. I think I'm through
all the easy answers now.
