Did you say that Windows mentioned a docked status in the start menu?
I'm wondering if the ThinkPad thinks it is docked to a docking station
and thus switches off the speakers thinking sound will be outputted
through the docking station's speakers.
As per the ThinkPad 570 and Ultrabase, when docked, the 570s internal
speaker switches off to use the Ultrabase's speakers.
I'm pretty sure this is the issue at heart here if Windows 98 believes
the ThinkPad 600E is docked.
