Alex is basically right, but the ONLY change you have to make in the
procedure I posted earlier is that you have to copy HIMEM.SYS from the
emergency disk (it's in the A:\ root directory) to drive C: at the same time
you copy OAKCDROM.SYS. I should have mentioned this, but obviously didn't.
The rest of the procedure is correct - and the Config.sys file that I listed
calls for Himem.sys, so it clearly needs to be on the disk. Copying
Himem.sys and Oakcdrom.sys from the root of A: to the root of C: will get
the job done. I've posted a revised description after the excerpt from
Alex's message, below

CORRECTED VERSION OF HOW TO INSTALL WINDOWS 98 SE
on a ThinkPad 760

Go to an existing Windows 98 machine and create a Startup Disk (Control
Panel - Add/Remove Programs - Startup Disk). Boot the 760XL from this disk;
save some time by choosing the option to boot without CD-ROM support.

At the end of the boot process, a message will appear saying that the
diagnostic tools have been successfully installed on Drive D: (or some other
letter); remember which letter it is.

Now, if necessary, run FDISK to prepare the hard drive and FORMAT C:/S to
make it bootable; if the hard drive is already formatted, use SYS C: to
make it bootable.

Now, copy the two files named OAKCDROM.SYS and HIMEM.SYS from
the root directory of the startup disk to the root directory of drive C:

Remember that the diskette created a RAM disk when booting, and that its
drive letter is perhaps D:. From the root directory of the RAM disk, copy
the
file MSCDEX.EXE to the root directory of drive C:

Run EDIT.com (it will be in the path; no need to find the program itself)
and create a C:\CONFIG.SYS file containing these commands:

device=himem.sys /testmem:off
device=oakcdrom.sys /D:mscd001
files=10
buffers=10
dos=high,umb
stacks=9,256

Now create a C:\AUTOEXEC.BAT file containing this line:

LH MSCDEX.EXE /D:mscd001

Turn off the machine, remove the floppy drive, install the CD-ROM drive,
restart the machine and make sure that it boots from the hard disk and
installs CD-ROM support. Insert the Windows 98 CD and make sure you can read
it.

On the C: drive, create a directory WIN98.

Copy all the files from the \WIN98 directory on the CD-ROM into the new
WIN98 directory on the hard disk.

Go to C:\WIN98 and run SETUP. This installs Windows 98, and leave all the
in98 setup files on your hard disk so that Windows can find them when it
neds them later, and won't prompt you to insert the CD.

After installing Windows 98, you may want to look at the instructions on
this page for information on how to get all the Microsoft security updates
on a single CD, and how to install all the Windows 98 updates and fixes in a
single step (but be sure to read the paragraph that begins "Warning" before
using the "unofficial 98 SE service pack"):
