Continuing the story of upgrading my 650MHz 600X (2645-5FU) to 800MHz.
OK, I went back into the BIOS and initialized the system and restarted in
safe mode. Intel's CPU frequency ID software identified the machine as
800MHz. The benchmark reported an increase of 61%! But now I know that this
is over the slowed down, 500MHz or so.
I restarted XP, and the machine was again slowed to something disappointing.
I googled "speedstep XP" and found one suggestion: Set the power scheme to
Always On. That was the trick. I'm now at 800MHz all the time, and the
machine is noticably snappier.
So, now it seems like a very worthwhile purchase.
