You had better luck than I.

The first swap didn't "take", and when I went to try the second processor I
ordered, it came out of the bag damaged.

The original 500 Mhz processor is back in place.

The bios DID recognize the new chip's speed, things just didn't work well
once the laptop was booted up.
Things seemed to cooperate for a while, then the axle snapped, and the
wheels came off.

Was worth the attempt. Nothing ventured, nothing gained.
