[Thinkpad] 80GB & 60GB drives (cheapish through (shudder) Dell)

Hi there,

I'm going to mention the Dell word below, so please feel free to skip/ take
some anti-nausea tablets before reading on

A few weeks ago Dell had one of their regular special offers giving 30% off
the cost of dell branded hard drives including laptops - and they're doing
it again

I had a 40GB in my T30 - which was rather full - so went ahead and ordered
the 80GB drive on the basis that if the worst came to the worst, I could
easily find a Dell to inflict it on amongst my friends and collegues in the
US

The drive (dell part 341-0193, claims to be a IC25N080ATMR04-0) arrived with
some strange dell plastic around it which took a couple of minutes to
remove. Backup'd up my existing 40GB (using Dantz' Retrospect) to my nice
160GB firewire drive on my desktop and then restored it to the new 80GB

Drive works fine!!!

Now the caveats should you decide to do this: -
- The drives are OEM'd from Hitachi so support is through Dell
- You'll get no help from Dell regarding installing the drive in an IBM -
naturally you shouldn't be surprised by that!
- You're not supporting any of the vendors on this list(!)
- This is from Dell's Small Business department, so you will get charged
sales tax

There are lots of 60GB and 80GB drives with the discount... Although you
should remember the caveats!!!
