Hello Everybody,
I just bought a new hard disk : a 20 GB - 4200 rpm IBM model
IC25N020ATCS04-0.
I want this disk to replace my 3.2 GB which is currently in my TP 600.
(I said 600, not 600E or 600X... ;)...)
My TP 600 is model 2645-41U, w/ PII 233 (upgraded to PII 333), 192 MB
SDRAM PC-66, Windows 2K SP3 runs fine.
In the BIOS, the new HD is detected, and the test says it's OK.
So, I tried to install Windows 2000.
I booted from the CD, and the first part of installation (before the
first reboot of the notebook) ran fine.
But, when the PC reboot, I get a "Disk Read error, Press
Ctrl-Alt-Suppr". Perhaps the NTFS format wasn't good....
I went to the Recovery Console to do a fixmbr and a fixboot, but nothing
new...
So I decided to install Windows 98SE... It ran fine, and half an hour
after, I was on Windows 98 Desktop.
Conclusion : The read error is not here because of a bad hard disk (I
hope so !...) I think its because of the BIOS (never updated.)
So, now, my questions :
- I thought the TP 600 could use a 20 GB HD... Is that wrong ?
- I haven't upgraded the bios yet. Is that necessary ? (I'd prefer
another solution, upgrading the BIOS scares me...)
- I saw a program to upgrade the HD firmware on IBM's pages. Should I
run this utility before upgrading the BIOS ?
Thank you !
Cheers !
Wilfried, from France.
