[Thinkpad] Thinkpad LCD - Hiss Reply ...

In my experience (With a NEC Versa Laptop) a symptom of no or low brightness
lcd output was the result of a failing transformer which is located on the
LCD
inverter board. If you point your ear where the inverter is you should hear
the hissing sound at this location.

Bottom line (i.e. practical experience):

With this symptom: No display and a hissing sound

I replaced the LCD inverter board with the result that the hissing sound was
gone and a normal display output was restored
