what are your thoughts about those two? Will you go for the X31 or for
the X40?
CS> This is a choice that only you can make. The X40 with the larger battery

yes... still a bit lighter but nearly 8 hours... that's a point that
could speak for the X40
CS> There are other differences too: The fastest CPU in the X40 is 1.3GHz

i have no idea about the perfomance of the Pentium-M. Currently i have
a P4m 1.6 GHz and that's enough power for me.
CS> Max. memory in X31 is 2048MB and X40 is 1280 or 1546MB.
CS> Memory runs at PC2100 speed in the X31 and PC2700 in the X40.
512 MB would be enough for me and the things i do with it.
And i have no idea about the speed difference with the memory too.
Will you notice that differnce? when?
CS> The X31 has 16MB dedicated graphics RAM, but I have not seen a gaming

The dedicated graphic could be a pro for the X31. I will play some old
3D-Games or Age-of-Empire from time to time... not sure if the
intel-extreme in the X40 would be enough for that?
CS> Firewire isn't an issue now, but are you sure it never will be?
yes i think so. I have a firewire in my desktop PC for an external
sound-device to record music. But i never thought about buying some
other devices for it ... OK, i had a digital video-cam connected via
Firewire two times - but hey, if i need that on the road i could do it
with a PCMCIA-Card
CS> Some X31 machines have 100 mbps networking. All X40's have gigabit.
My network is slower: 100 MBit and a WLAN. Gigabit may be interesting
in 1 or 2 years.. but i've seen X31 with gigabit too

That's great to "hear" :-) So the power consumtion is really low in
standby - great!

CS> X31's with bluetooth: 2672-JHU, -REU, -RHU, 2884-JGU, -JUU
OK, i've seen a X31 with BT in a shop now... interesting.. but the
price is more or less the same as for the X40... strange...
