There are (and always have been) many fewer owners of modem dial-in pops
than there are service providers. The service providers have a choice when
expanding:
1. Spend the money to establish new POPs, or
2. Rent POP capacity from others.
Most chose option 2.

So, the numbers you see in Hawaii really probably being rented to both MSN
and inter.net . Thus, they'll probably work equally well for both.

In the days before AOL acquired Compuserve, Compuserve was one of the better
travel solutions, because they owned POPs all over the globe.
They even had POPs in Eastern Block countries before the Iron Wall came
down.
The only other network of similar size was IIN (IBM Information Network).

Once AOL acquired Compuserve, they instantly became the largest owner of
POPs on the planet.

This is all AFAIK, and YMMV ! :-)
