I can boot my 560x to Win98 SE or DOS from the PCMCIA card slot
(actually CF card in PC card adapter)
I understand that later Thinkpads don't support booting from the card
slot. I'm not sure about XP.
If you go to setup (F1 on start) you should have an option to select
start up devices.
