They had a Netgear 802.11a access point (not a router, just an AP) for sale
a while back, which I picked up for something like $30cad. It works
flawlessly with the IBM a/b/g card I've got in my T40. No more dropped
connections when the phone rings! :-)

That's interesting that it caused static. I've got two 2.4ghz wireless
phones in my house, and when I was using an 802.11b connection my laptop
would completely lose its association with the router when the phone rang.
Highly frustrating.

Go with 802.11a if you can find cheap hardware being cleared out...
