Well the only way to find out exactly what each hidden file is to
identify each one and research its existence and what it does.
Painstaking. Alternatives are having a virus checker on the go as soon
as you install the OS and have it do weekly checks, and run a spybot
regularly.
bar ditching Windows, there's not a great deal you can do. But the swap
file will be a good part of that 447MB.

Well I have 3:
560X - 350mb ATA Flash II PCMCIA card with 2 x 256MB data cards
(Windows 3.11 For Workgroups with DOS 6.22 - plenty of space with all
the stuff I need, office 4.3, ie 5.01, terminal services client,
networking, modem setup, mp3 player)
560Z - 3.2GB Hard disk. Windows 2000 Server OS. (my server)
T23 - 40gb Hard disk.
I know you have to keep a system in check, keep it trim, see what is
going on, but having Norton AV and SpyBot running plus a good knowledge
of NT architecture has always kept my computers very safe.
Unfortunately sometimes though for all the pruning in the world, you
will keep hitting the hard disk's capacity if it is one of your main
machines, and it's better to bite the bullet and upgrade with a bigger
hard disk, it will make things much more productive, not having to worry
what is using up space all the time and getting on with your work -
which surely is better than fiddling with hidden .inf, .sys, .vxd etc.
files. (ARGH .vxd's the bane of Windows 9x!)
However I have to say it, using Windows98 is just going to ask for
problems at times due to its nasty habit of bit rotting ie: it going bad
with age.
That said I tried Knoppix today, and well, you know... I rather like it.
The KDE environment is rather nice, makes me wonder about Lindows...
Vicky
