Re: [Thinkpad] IBM Service Lands Short on Error1722During Rescue/Ultra Rapid Restore Install (Redux)

Ugh. It sounds like your RR3 uninstall didn't accomplish much. You shouldn't even HAVE an
RR3 folder. Did you use Windows' Add/Remove Programs, an RR3 Uninstall program, or
execute the remove command from a DOS prompt?

Sounds like you'd better uninstall all the pre-RRRR XPoint stuff. These manual uninstall
instructions were written for the 2.x versions, but they still look appropriate for
finding those remnants:.

I'm not so sure those two boot sectors are causing the 1722 error at all, since that's a
Java InstallShield error message. I know you've reinstalled the Java Runtime Environment
at least once, but did you happen to see Java's recommendation for installing it
differently if you're getting 1722 errors?

It seems that you have several possible contributors to the problem:

JRE alone could be causing an InstallShield failure.
RRRR will not run unless all prior RR programs are removed first. You still have a hard
drive full of RR3 (at least).
RRRR won't install if it smells any file corruption (like munged sectors?). Suggest
running CHKDSK /f just in case it might help.
RRRR is supposed to overwrite other boot managers, but if the RRRR install fails, you end
up with a bunch of possibly-competing boot managers.
If you don't have a functioning RRRR boot manager, it's not likely to do its
sector-finding duties. And if RR3 has not successfully been uninstalled, any part of the
hard drive it's holding hostage haven't been released to be used again.

I know doing all these things is not a very appealing prospect, but none of the
potentially-curative work sounds optional to me. Well, maybe CHKDSK /f, but it'd be
short-sighted not to bother.

I know you've spent so much time and frustration on this, Bob. And I remember that you
tried to find out everything you could from other people here, months ago, before ever
embarking on this RR/RRR3/UIltrr/RRRR odyssey. You seemed to be doing everything a prudent
person should do. I really hope SOMETHING works for you soon!

Personally, I just have RR 2.something, and even on that I disabled the three "Services"
because the ET-phone-home functions made my X21 crash on startup just once too often.
