[Thinkpad] Re: T600E harddisk upgrade ??

I am thinking of upgrading the harddisk on my Thinkpad T600E.
 
Currently it has an internal 6.4GB drive.
 
I am a novice with regards to Hardware and would appreciate your help/info regarding the following :
 
a) The current 6.4GB drive is rated at 4200/2MB. I am thinking about buying a 20GB/30GB drive.
 
Most drives that I find are rated at 5400 or 7200 with 8MB cache.
 
Will the T600E support these newer drives or should I stick with buying a drive rated for 4200/2MB itself ?
 
b) I have noticed that 3.5" drives are much cheaper than 2.5" drives.
    Ideally, I would like to retain the existing 6.4GB internal harddisk and buy an external 3.5" drive ( say 160GB or 200 GB) drive and connect it to the T600E.
 
Is this possible ? Has anybody tried something similar ?
 
Any pointers would be much appreciated
