Yes. I have a Hitachi travelstar 40GB, 5400 RPM 8 MB
drive in my 600E. It's quieter than the original drive!

I have connected an external HD to my laptop via a
Firewire cardbus card. Works fine.
The two major choices are USB 2 (cheaper) and Firewire (better
compatibility with digital videocameras). Performance is
about the same (i.e., excellent) for both USB 2 and Firewire.
Another option is a 2nd drive in the Ultraslimbay. I've also
tried that, and it works.
If you're using huge drives such as 200 GB, it might be good to have
an OS that's designed for them. For instance Win2K or XP as opposed to
Win98. I use Win2K. XP is a bit more demanding of system
resources.
