[Thinkpad] Strangeness on a NEW ThinkPad

OK, here is a new one on me!
Sold a new sealed T-30 to a local customer. She wanted to open the box
herself, so I didn't do any type of setup.
She cranks it up, there is a sign on screen with a user name of "whammotech"
or some such. She overwrites She notices that MS Office is installed, along
with some other stuff. She installs her custom software.
On re-boot, it won't take her user name and password!
So she calls IBM, they seem to recognize the user name, and state that it is
trying to log onto a domain, and she needs the password!
Of course, we are going to do a complete recovery on the system, but the
question is:
How does a new sealed unit get an OS with a log-in request and MS Office
installed?
She confirms that everything in the box was sealed, it was not a re-pack in
any way. I got it from a source that I have gotten many new machines from.
some of which are AAP machines,
So the question is:
Did IBM custom configure a machine for a customer who them surplused it off
without even opening the box? Do they do that?
There was a thread last year about some T-23's that came with a Win2K COA
and XP XPro installed. I know, I had 8 of them, all new!
And I bought another from PC Connection on closeout, same thing. But there
was some evidence that the bottom of the box had been opened and re-sealed.
On this one, no such evidence. It was sealed with the IBM security label and
IBM tape.
Anyone got any ideas? Just curious, no damage is done, the recovery will
proceed.
