I've never used a 770, but the method of getting the DOS screen to expand to
its farthest limit (whatever that may be) is the same on all Thinkpads, I
believe. Install the DOS-based configuration program (ask the list if you
don't know how to get it), and run something like
c:\thinkpad\ps2 hvexp on

Fn+F8 should do the job also, but you may need to turn expansion on first,
and also give the command:
c:\thinkpad\ps2 f8 enable
As I said, I've never used a 770, but this should get you the largest
possible DOS image.
(I keep planning to buy myself a 770Z - the one with the higher-res screen -
to play with, but I can never justify spending the money, and I always want
one in excellent condition...)
