Your 600E will handle drives that fast and that large. The IDE controller in
the early 600E's will go at 33MB/s, and most drives will not sustain data
rates that high. It will handle drives at least as large as 138GB, but the
largest available are 80GB.

Sure it's possible, but it has several disadvantages. An internal hard disk
is MUCH faster than any external drive. The new drives make much less noise
that the old drives that came with the 600E too.

As to how much faster, if you get a USB drive, that is limited to 12Mb/s
(12 million BITS per second), as opposed to the newest drives with sustained
data rates at let's say 15 megaBYTES per second. So ten or more times
faster.
That's very noticeable. Not to mention that you have another box to tote
around if you are on the move. (This is using the USB1.1 port on the 600E.)

Even if you go over a 100Mb/s network instead of USB, there's extra latency
introduced by the network and I'd guess it would be only half as fast as an
internal drive.

If it were me, I would strongly consider buying a newER drive (say 20GB or
so) to get a quiet drive with a good deal of capacity for when mobile, and a
network device at home, or just another shared drive in a server.

Take care,
Chris
