[Thinkpad] A30/p Embedded Controller Update = Danger, Will Robinson!

Thought I'd post before someone else wanders into the miasma and gets stuck
without a rope.

The Embedded Controller Update v 1.06 should not be installed if you have a
non - IBM replacement laptop battery.

One of the new features is displayed as "battery enhancement", and
immediately after running the update program, my battery light began to
flash. Upon reboot, lo and behold, the system reports a bad battery,
critical was the exact term.

With an IBM battery, operation was normal. With the Kahlon battery, no joy.
Absent AC power, Windows dove straight into hibernation upon reboot,
believing the battery to be discharged.

Bios is current version, 1.18 BTW.

Downgrading the controller to the previous software version of 1.05 remedied
the issue.

Of course, I went through the upgrade process twice, just to be sure I
hadn't messed up something. And now I can report that the downgrade was also
applied twice, successfully.

Caveat: Downgrades needed to be applied from floppy disk, rather than the
diskless version of the program, which won't continue with the overwrite.

YMMV

Matt
