[Thinkpad] CMOS battery question

OK, this *feels* like a dumb question, but that won't stop me: If I decide
to replace a CMOS battery, how long do I have to do it? I assume all the
settings don't vanish the second I pop the old one out (but if they do, I
sure want to know first!). I have several aging systems (desktops &
laptops) that would be worth replacing the batteries on before they fail.
