Thanks Bruce and Matt
I could see either possibility.
I definitely recall a 2 IDE limit on older PCs although the fact that
the cards show up in the PC card eject box suggests that the hardware
can handle 2 cards.
On the other hand I must confess that I have removed large chunks of
Windows in my attempt to revert to DOS so I could see the possibility
that I removed something useful.

To resolves this question I need to find someone with a 560x and the
stock Win98 installation that can mount 2 large cards.
If they can see both cards (listed as "IDE/ESDI hard disk controller")
then my lite install of Win98 is flawed.
If they can't see both cards with the stock install then I'm inclined to
think there's an inherent problem with Win98.
