No need to feel sorry about the length of your post. Long is GOOD if you are looking for
help. It is much better to include as much information as possible, even if you don't
think it will all be relevant. Sometimes the weirdest things end up being related, like a
physical hardware-appearing problem being caused by a quirk of an operating system file..
And don't despair about fixing your Thinkpad! You just need to get accustomed to looking
for information.
Start with the IBM website. Go to the support home page
http://www-3.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/home.do and enter that seven-digit number (no
hyphen needed) in the Quick Path box on the right. That should produce a page with a
description of your particular Thinkpad and a lists of links that may be useful to you.
BOOKMARK it; there will be many times you'll want to refer to it again. When you have some
time, try each of the drop-down menus to get a feel for the scope of information
available.
The other page you'll need is Search. I'm not going to give you the URL; it's more
efficient for you to choose Search PC Support from the left sidebar on another IBM page,
then bookmark the resulting search form page. Personally I've found that using fewer
rather than more keywords works better, but you just have to get the hang of searching for
yourself.
