Unfortunately, a large number of Windows 98 (NOT SE) users were not so
lucky. There were huge numbers of people who had no connect or flakey
connects with USB. This USB connection problem, alnong with a lot of
other peripheral connection issues, were the main reason manufacturers
forced Microsoft to issue the Windows 98 Second Edition. All sorts of
connections with Windows 98 were unpredictable from machine to machine and
manufacturer to manufacturer. It was rumored that IBM went ahead on its
own to increase sensitivity and reliability of USB connections, before
Microsoft elected to issue the update. Perhaps yours is one of those.
