[Thinkpad] x30 v. x31

For those who enjoyed the thread a few days ago in which I wondered if I
have an x30 or an x31, I thought I'd mention that IBM support believes
it's an x30 sold without an operating system.

I'd ordered a recovery cd, got one marked x30 2672, installed it and got
XP (it didn't ask for a serial number, but requires activation), but no
IBM drivers or software. Called support, which said they shouldn't have
sent a cd, as the machine was sold wihtout an OS and, btw, it's an x30.
After 30 minutes with a supervisor, including reading him info from
ibm.com (he said he doesn't have internet access) about the machine,
reading him the XP license sticker from the bottom of the machine (an
IBM sticker), noting that the machine was marked x31 and listening to a
rant against CTO builds, he agreed to send a recovery CD which should
work. In the meanwhile, I'm running w2k.

Other than this hassle, and that I keep hitting the up arrow key when I
want the down arrow key (likely because the palm rest is shorter than
the rest on my old machine), I'm very happy with the unit.

JFTR, IBM is having a harder time deciding my machine type than we had.
