 From other posts, the x31 bios checks whether wifi cards to see if they
are a genuine IBM card, If not, you'll get an error on boot:

ERROR
1802: Unauthorized network card is plugged in
Power off and remove the miniPCI network card.

The only differences between the IBM version of the card and the Intel
version is that the IBM costs about $60 and the Intel costs about $30,
and this bios check. There is a workaround - a program called
no-1802.com will remove the check. If you use this program, the wifi
signal strength light (below the screen, near the battery light) won't work.

I trust someone will correct me if I'm wrong. I've read a lot of posts
on the subject, but have no direct experience.
