Yeah, I understand that version 8 is the version of the product marketed as Word 97. I
don't have Word on my TP either, and most of the time Word docs open with WordPad; every
once in a while I have a problem. Sometimes it turns out that my .doc file association
with WordPad has disappeared.
You shouldn't have to open the file to turn it into text; right-click the file name and
rename it with a .txt extension. Windows will warn you that the form will be altered and
ask if you still want to. As Jonathan points out, you'll have a bunch of formatting
garbage to cut, but the text content will be there.
As others have mentioned, there are all kinds of free filetype morphers out there,
including some that will read your Word doc to you as a .wav. Google for something like
"word file conversion".
