[Thinkpad] fan testing

According to the HMM for an X31, PC Doctor includes a test: Diagnostics
--> Other Devices --> IBM Fan. When I run PC Doctor, there is no entry
for fan. Also, the System Information function reports Thermal State as
2 [unknown].

Could someone with an X31 please check to see if they get the same
results?

I ask because the machine has been running rather warm . The fan turns
on a boot, but doesn't otherwise run unless the machine is very hot
(although yesterday morning it ran constantly). I'm wondering if there
is some issue with whatever controls the fan - if PC Doctor is not
finding the fan when it should, that could be a clue.
