I suggest you stop trying to make that disk bootable or even writing
anything whatever onto it until you have retrieved those important files.

Do you have any way to connect that sick drive to a working machine with a
slimbay drive adapter or by USB or PC Card adapter? And do you have a
another working computer or at least a second drive with which to make
that laptop operational again?
