I don't know about 'common' apps, and I don't know what the OP had in
mind. However, for graphics work resolution certainly matters,
and I know that for some lattice-plotting packages if the number of
nodes gets too great for a given resolution then the horizontal lines
tend to disappear altogether, changing radically the appearance of the
lattice.
Myself, I *prefer* lower resolution, because I still use some DOS apps
with built-in graphical charsets that assume a SVGA screen (and are too
tiny on a high-res screen).
