Hello,
I can think of a few things here that I actually rather depend on the SXGA+
screen.
This is not because I'm some lazy ass wuss who has been spoilt with SVGA
resolutions since I was brought up, I remember, perhaps not very fondly the
joys of programming a nifty C program in 640x240 resolution, a massive 2 bit
depth was to be had, now while not the most primitive thing going, I'm sure
someone can recount their joys of using their Oric Atmos or TRS-80 and say
"well i had 160x120x1" ;) And for the most part I survived on that screen,
editing the code, compiling, testing etc., all in 2megs of memory. It
actually worked so well that for a time when I was devoid of an
'accelerator' card on a later computer, I was again left with a 2MB 680EC20
computer, and since the app was a text based POP/SMTP solution I managed to
keep my email going, somehow. The biggest problem was the TCP/IP stack I
seem to recall but this neither here nor there today, just clearing up the
fact that I have been quite used to very low resolutions by today's standard
for quite a few years, some years ago.
So fast forward a few years, I have been treated to the wonders of 800x600
with no flicker and so forth and I'm using a T23 with XGA resolution. Oh
it's nice and clear on this panel. But with what I do we run into problems,
the taskbar is rammed full of little window boxes, now which was which (I
use XP), no problem, expand the task bar, that looses screen estate. How
about auto hiding it? That has always got on my nerves.
But it goes further that just a cluttered task bar. I genuinely find it so
much easier editing my PHP code, and websites etc. on a larger screen, much
more room for having the code, ftp console and web browser in view to make
editing much more fluid. same goes for my access development, i can have
the windows dotted around nicely and have a 1024x768 sized main Access XP
window and still be able to work nicely, without windows overlapping
controls etc. Also I can edit the VB code easily from its window, and still
see the form i am working on so i can see how the code makes changes easily.
This might sound like nit picking but my general feeling is since moving to
SXGA+; my work has sped noticeably.
Also Photoshop, simply put, XGA resolution is too small to edit some of the
stuff i work on (over 3000x3000 pixels sometimes) and when I need to work in
detail but be able to see the broader picture surrounding where I am editin
for matching colour, seeing how it affects the wider canvas, does it fit, a
zoomed out editing session on XGA screen is nigh on impossible.
The bottom line is, no there is nothing you cant do on an XGA screen that I
do on SXGA+; but I would find it tremendously difficult to go back to XGA
now and it would hamper my working style, which is to do as much as I can at
once, multitasking round robin stylee ;)
As for whether I could put up with 640x240 again...
*hmmm*
;)
As for whether I'd be narked if IBM said they couldn't supply the exact
screen as a replacement under warantee straight away but could in 5 months -
yes I would be peeved. But I would probably have accepted the XGA screen
should it be put into writing and signed that I would in due course when
stock arrived, receive a SXGA+ panel. Being as my T23 is the only computer
I own now, its obviously of importance to have a working machine of some
sort; as I no longer have 2 or 3 other thinkpads to rig up and use in some
manner.
Nor do I have a desktop machine or any desire for one either.
Well I wrote too much again but there you have it...
Vicky
