[Thinkpad] DVD MultiBurner Problems on X40/Linux

I'm trying to get the DVD MultiBurner to work on an X40 under linux. The
burner is connected through the base (rather than USB).

Whenever I put a blank DVD in, it does a funny grinding sound for a
while. I see in dmesg:

hdc: packet command error: status=0x51 { DriveReady SeekComplete Error }
hdc: packet command error: error=0x30
ATAPI device hdc:
Error: Medium error -- (Sense key=0x03)
(reserved error code) -- (asc=0x02, ascq=0x00)
The failed "Read Cd/Dvd Capacity" packet command was:
"25 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 "

I've tried several blanks, just to make sure it's not a single bad one,
but no luck.

Everything is brand new--the laptop, the burner, and the DVDs.

I am able to read CDs fine with the drive.

I'm trying to figure out if this is a hardware or software problem. Does
anyone have any experience with this? Any suggestions?
