As I mentioned earlier, I was able to take the new drive with the image and
use it to boot another separate system. In fact, we use this method to
create bootable drive images almost daily. Is there something special in the
BIOS that might cause the operating system not to be recognized by the
Thinkpad?

Almost never will a drive image make a hard drive bootable. You must
first install the OS you were using with the drive you want to image,
then migrate the image over to the new drive and it should work fine.
Ghosts and images are not bootable. It is an OS issue. Although
sometimes it does work, it usually does not on most machines with most
hard drives and operating systems.
