As an added note, the by-invitation-only is because Gmail is still a beta
product. Eventually (perhaps in the 3rd millennium) it will go public, and
everyone can sign up without an invite.

My own personal theory is that while they are still tweaking the service,
the main purpose of the invitation-only state is to allow them to scale
things up gradually instead of being overwhelmed by a mad rush.
