That was the first thing I tried to do as I hate working on an original HD
without _some_ form of backup. I tried TrueImage 7, DiskCopy, Ghost, PM8 and
they all failed utterly with all kinds of dire warnings regarding the HD's
sectors.

Yep, that had been my hope in this case, clone everything to a known good HD
and _then_ attempt to recover as much as possible.

I've already got the warranty replacement HD from Maxtor, so I'm in the
process of re-installing everything fresh rather than attempting to clone
the recovery I ultimately made.
