[Thinkpad] typical battery life

My standard-size T40 battery has started to show noticably-reduced
battery life. It seems like I'm seeing around an hour on a full
charge (using the 'word processing/email' profile) although I've never
timed it.

I've had the machine for about 18 months. Is this just what I should
expect, and its time to get a new one?

And if so, what's the realistic lifetime of the high-capacity battery?
